RRS Discovery visits Liverpool

Launched in April 2012 and named by the Princess Royal in October 2013, RRS Discovery is the newest addition to the UK’s fleet of research vessels.

She is owned and operated by NERC, the UK’s main agency for research and work relating to atmospheric, Earth, biological, terrestrial and aquatic science, from the deep oceans to the upper atmosphere and from the poles to the equator.

NERC coordinate some of the world’s most exciting research projects, tackling major issues such as climate change, environmental influences on human health, the genetic make-up of life on Earth, and much more.

RRS Discovery cost £75m and is designed to support world-leading marine research everywhere from tropical seas to polar oceans. Her 100m length is packed with state-of-the-art scientific equipment, the infrastructure needed to deploy it and facilities to keep 28 scientists and 24 crew comfortable for up to 50 days at a time.

As well as a sophisticated suite of internal equipment, the ship can deploy a range of remotely operated and autonomous underwater vehicles, and features dynamic positioning thrusters that can keep her in exactly the same position even in heavy seas.

RRS Discovery will be alongside Liverpool Cruise Terminal from Friday 13th December to Sunday 15th December. She will not be open to the public but can be viewed from Princes Parade if you wish to take a look at this exceptional research vessel.
