Rolling on the River!

The Cruise Season in Liverpool got underway in grand style in at the end of May with inaugural visits by Ruby Princess and an overnight stay by Queen Victoria as part of Cunard’s RMS Aquitania’s 100th anniversary of its maiden voyage to New York on 30 May 1914. These two important ship visits occurred on consecutive days and resulted in a street party event taking place on the shore side adjacent to Liverpool Cruise Terminal.

To mark these two momentous occasions, Liverpool Cruise Terminal arranged two wonderful mid-river firework displays as well as ‘Jet Pack Jay’ – a world champion fly-boarder who not only greeted the crowds in his spectacular neon suit but also ‘flew’ up on his water-jets to greet the Cunard line Commodore and Master of Queen Victoria as he saluted from the Bow Hatch.

A number of high class street food stalls and a live band played throughout the 3 days of ship visits whilst the departure of Queen Victoria was serenaded by mezzo soprano opera singer Danielle Thomas to the delight of the many thousands of spectators that had come to the waterfront to wave the ship goodbye until next year.

In May 2015, maritime history will be made in Liverpool when the Cunard fleet return to their spiritual home in front of the city’s World Heritage Waterfront as part of Cunards 175th anniversary celebrations. The city of Liverpool is putting a whole host of world class events to ensure both the passengers and the anticipated hundreds of thousands of spectators have a once in a life time experience.
